LATINITIES IN QUESTION: EUROPE, LATIN AMERICA, BRAZIL

French and German film festivals have a tradition of defending peripheral cinematographies in the audiovisual economy and films from countries colonized by Europeans, with an intense and historical relationship with Brazilian and Latin American cinema. But the festivals differ greatly from each other and the presence of Latin American and Brazilian productions varies depending on the curatorial teams and the emphasis of each event. In many cases, this Latin American presence remains null or small, with films from the region competing with each other for space, or one and another title occupying the same spaces. The Directors’ Fortnight and the Entrevues Belfort festival, specifically, were created to reveal and accompany “new authors” from all corners. The Latin American Film Festival Munich (LAFITA) has a circumscribed focus on Latin America. To what extent does this aspect unfold in the project of participating in the writing of a history of world cinema, aware of the peculiarities of regional cinematographies? According to what criteria/values are Brazilian films viewed by French and German curators put into perspective in a historiography of contemporary forms, themes, and contexts?
