The opening session will be on the night of September 20th, Tuesday, at 8 pm, at Cine Theatro Brasil Vallourec, with a premiere of “Bare Absence”, directed by Marcos Pimentel, whose development project was the winner of Brasil CineMundi in 2015. MAIN THEME- LATIN AMERICAN CINEMA: WHAT ARE THE IMAGES OF INTERNATIONALIZATION?
The 16th CineBH presents a new conceptual approach: to celebrate and reflect on Latin American production, bringing its brothers from the continent to Brazil and putting them in direct contact with different perspectives that will be able to see the effervescence of the production that marks the territory. The proposed theme is “Latin American cinema: what are the images of internationalization?”. The question was raised by the curation team, under the coordination of Cleber Eduardo, to bring to the debate the complicated relationship between what is done in Latin American films and what effectively draws attention on screens around the world – and the amount of “legitimation” by various instances (festivals, exhibition circuits, TV channels and streaming platforms) is necessary for certain titles to break the bubble.
Several questions will guide the debates and also permeate the choice of films for the Continente Program, which will screen 15 feature films from 11 countries in Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Among them, there are award-winning titles, such as the Brazilian “Alien Nights” (Sérgio de Carvalho) and “Empty House” (Giovani Borba), and some revelations, such as the unusual Cuban science fiction “Blue Heart” (Miguel Coyula).
The questions to be discussed in conversations around the main theme are: are there any conditions for the cinema made from North to South of the continent, from Mexico to Uruguay, not to depend so much on blessings from outside Latin America? Is there a desire and feasibility for the internationalization of Latin American films to expand dialogues, businesses, thoughts and the recognition of affinities within the set of Latin American countries, assuming the many differences in historical formation and contemporary circumstances, but without losing sight of the potentials of being a continental bloc? To what extent is it possible to rely on the financial possibilities of Europe and Asia for films whose identity is Latino just to be showcased in the world? And what is the role of Brazil in this continental geopolitics in which it is invariably inserted (for geographical and historical reasons), but from which sometimes it seems so distant?
The thematic debate on “Latin American cinema: what are the images of internationalization?” will bring together producers and distributors of Latin productions. On September 21st, Eva Cáceres (Argentina/Punto de Fuga Cine), Ivette Liang (Cuba/EICTV – Nuevas Miradas), Micaela Solé (Uruguay/Cordon Films), Paulo de Carvalho (Germany/Autentika Films) and Cleber Eduardo (coordinator of the curation team at CineBH), moderated by Ester Fér (one of the curators of Continente Program).
HOMAGE – REJANE FARIA –ACTRESS
The homage of CineBH 2022 will be offered to the Minas Gerais actress Rejane Faria, who has stood out in theater, film and TV/streaming platforms in recent years. Graduated in performing arts from UNI-BH and in theater from UFMG, Rejane, 61, was one of the founders, in 2007, of the collective quatroloscinco teatro do comum, one of the main theater groups in the capital of Minas Gerais since then. Her debut on the big screen was in the short film “Fifteen” (2014), by Maurílio Martins, starting an expressive partnership with the Minas Gerais production company Filmes de Plástico. With FdP, she participated in the films “Rhapsody for the Black Man” (Gabriel Martins, 2015), “Nothing” (Gabriel Martins, 2017), “Long Way Home” (André Novais Oliveira, 2018), “In the Heart of the World” (Maurílio Martins and Gabriel Martins, 2019) and “Mars One” (Gabriel Martins, 2022). At Globoplay, she participated in the series “Second Call” (2021). Some of these titles will be part of the Homage Program, in addition to the presence of Rejane Faria for a Q&A.

In all, there are 27 films, followed by conversations with the participation of guests and film crews.

The program has two screenings dedicated to children, in which, in addition to film screenings, there will be also circus performances and magic shows.
The Historical Dialoguesprogram was curated by the Bolivian critic and researcher Sebastian Morales Escoffier, who selected three feature films from Bolivia, in dialogue with the theme of this edition. Escoffier will be at the event to discuss each of them with the audience. The titles are: “Como duele ser pueblo” (Hugo Roncal, 2022), “El olor de tu ausencia” (Eddy Vasquez, 2013) and “Lo más bonito y mis mejores años” (Martin Boulocq, 2005).
There’s a program for the whole family, with the Mostrinha (Children’s program) taking place on September 24 and 25, Saturday and Sunday, in Santa Tereza, at Minas Tênis Clube, in Praça da Liberdade. The screenings will be accompanied by characters from Turma do Pipoca and circus interventions.

The screenings will be held on September 21 and 22 (Wednesday and Thursday), at 8 am (morning shift) and 2 pm (afternoon shift), at the Grande Teatro do Sesc Palladium, Teatro Sesiminas and Cine Santa Tereza. Altogether, six Cine-School Screenings will be promoted, followed by Cine-Debates, for students from the age of five, with the screening of 16 Brazilian films that address universal and educational themes for the formation of children and young people, aiming to benefit more than 3,000 students.
